Student Opportunities – Part-Time/Work Study/Internship
ITRR administers surveys throughout Montana to better understand visitor travel patterns and behaviors. This research helps the state make informed decisions about tourism, infrastructure, and destination planning.
Field work: Conduct on-site surveys with out-of-state travelers at gas stations and the airport in the greater Missoula area. Distribute mail-back surveys that are returned to ITRR and analyzed alongside your field data. A vehicle will be provided for student surveyors, located on the UM campus.
On-campus work: Prepare mail-back survey envelopes, enter data from returned surveys, potentially design surveys for various projects, and learn data analysis methods. This work can be structured around your schedule and may count toward a capstone project or internship.
Pay: Up to $17/hour.
Who can apply: Students and members of the public. Students have the option of using a provided vehicle for fieldwork.

Positions Open to the Public – Montana
ITRR conducts surveys throughout Montana to better understand visitor travel patterns and behaviors. This on-site research helps the state make informed decisions about tourism, infrastructure, and destination planning.
The opportunity: Administer surveys at gas stations and airports across Montana, talking directly with travelers about their trips. Flexible work with multiple locations available throughout the state. Mileage reimbursement for using your personal vehicle.
Requirements: Access to a reliable car and dependable internet to submit timesheets and travel documentation.

National Park Service Surveying – Temporary Work
ITRR and its research partners (RRC Associates and OTAK) have a contract with the National Park Service to study visitor use patterns and social issues to help improve park planning and management. This research directly supports better decision-making at some of America’s most iconic destinations.
The opportunity: Travel to National Parks and conduct face-to-face visitor surveys. Work with ITRR and/or our partner organizations on fieldwork that contributes to real management outcomes. Pay is up to $20/hour. All travel, lodging, and per diem meals are covered—you just show up and do the work.
The commitment: Typically 7-12 days per park, including travel time. Multiple parks may be available throughout the season.
Who can apply: Students and members of the public. No surveying experience necessary—we provide training.
